Types of Sounds in a movie

> Diegetic

Diegetic sound is when there is sound and you know where does the source of sound come from on screen. Example the radio, conversation, ear- phones, etc.

> Non Diegetic

Non Diegetic is when there is sound but you don’t know where is it coming from they don’t show or you don’t see the source from where the sound comes from.

this is an example: this video shows a scene from the movie jaws with no music background and background music being added. Reminder you can’t see the where the song comes from.

> Contrapuntal

Contrapuntal is when the sound goes against your expectation like when you see a dead body you would scream but instead of screaming the character laughs.

Here is an example… please ignore the title

> Parallel

Parallel is when the sound compliments what we see on screen or each other. example a happy scene will have a happy background music or another example is children laughing at the beach.

  • Close up shots are meant to show the audience the expression or feelings that the character is going through.

2. Extreme Close Up Shot:

Larry (the guy on the left) looks happy and sort of worried or last bothered), Martin (the guy on the right side) looks worried and angry just by looking at the face and body language while Matt Hooper (the guy in the middle) looks like his trying to say something but nobody is paying attention to him and he also looks pissed.

Jaws

The movie jaws comes under the genre thriller. Thriller (genre) uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements to stimulate the audiences mood so the movie would be more interesting as its gives the audience anxiety, terror, anticipation , expectations, and sometimes unexpected events.

To be honest and from what my teacher said to the class the genre of a movie depends on the audience like maybe for people age 16-20+ the genre is thriller but for kids aged 6-10+ the genre can be horror it all just depends on the audience.

A little brief about the Jaws:

A woman was killed by a shark when she went skinny dipping near a tourist town of Amity Island the case was than reported. A police chief name Martin Brody wants to close the beach down but the Mayor Larry Vaughn doesn’t allows him because fearing that loss of tourist will cripple the town. Two man named Matt Hooper an Ichthyologist and a ship captain Quint has offer to help the Chief to capture the shark. This movie is basically between Man Vs Shark / Nature.
